Curriculum in Pharmacoepidemiology Training and Alignment with Updated Core Competencies: State of the Field and Educational Needs Assessment

Background: An ISPE working group has reviewed and updated core competencies to be conferred in educational programs for the next generation of robustly-trained pharmacoepidemiologists. In 2022, the working group hosted a symposium at the ICPE meeting to solicit feedback on a proposed pharmacoepidemiology curriculum assessment survey. The working group is now distributing this curriculum assessment survey to identify the presence and needs gaps of the updated core competencies in curriculum among training programs in pharmacoepidemiology.

Objectives: The following objectives will be accomplished during this session:
1) To present results of the curriculum assessment survey from pharmacoepidemiology programs;
2) To describe the needs for pharmacoepidemiology curriculum as they relate to gaps in updated core competencies for training programs;
3) To obtain feedback regarding strategies for incorporating curriculum assessment from pharmacoepidemiology-relevant programs and institutions that are not currently represented in ISPE’s program directory;
4) To inform recommendations regarding the development of ISPE-endorsed educational and training resources to align with the updated core competencies.

Description: The workshop is endorsed by the Academic Council, and will be divided into two sections. An initial presentation will be given to the workshop audience to share the preliminary results of the curriculum assessment survey (Objective #1) and to describe identified gaps in core competencies from curriculum assessment survey respondents (Objective #2). This presentation will be prepared by ISPE working group members and describe the state of the field. The second section will involve active engagement from the audience; specifically, we envision splitting attendees in smaller groups and participating in roundtable discussions led by a working group member. Roundtables will be directed to provide up to 2 key points each as responses to a short series of questions to address Objective #3 and #4. Topics discussed in each group will be recorded by table leads and incorporated in to the second manuscript from the working group describing the state of core competencies in current pharmacoepidemiology curriculum. ISPE members will benefit from participation as they will help shape the future of our field by informing recommendations for educational and training resources in pharmacoepidemiology.
