PhD Candidate - Epidmiology
Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Occupational Health, McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada, Canada
Fiona Chan (MSc, BSc(Pharm), RPh) is a doctoral candidate in epidemiology at McGill University. As a practicing pharmacist, her research interests are in understanding the factors across all levels of the health system which enable safe, equitable, and sustainable access to medications for patients. Her work utilizes methods from epidemiology as well as health services research to understand the complex interplay of these factors. Under the supervision of Dr. Robyn Tamblyn, her doctoral thesis examines the association of various physician characteristics with the prescribing of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), and the subsequent risk of adverse drug events. The goal of this work is to identify opportunities for targeted interventions to curb the use of PIMs and, when their use is necessary, physician factors that enable them to be used more safely.
Fiona holds a BSc in Pharmaceutical Sciences and a MSc in Population and Public Health from the University of British Columbia. Her past research includes examining the effects of pharmacist-led interventions, and the effects various public and private health insurance schemes have on access to medications in Canada. When not busy with her research work, Fiona can be found at the pottery studio, or riding her bike to the climbing gym.
